MEMORIES IN THE MAKING – THE HISTORY OF THE SHOP

Much to the delight of local Hawkesbury Scrapbookers, Memories in the Making first opened in 2001 in a small mall in Richmond NSW. It was sold to the current owner Kylie Gatto in March 2004. With the change in ownership the local scrapbookers took the store to heart and after only a couple of months voted for the store in the 2004 Hawkesbury District Business Awards where it was awarded as a Finalist.

With the growth of the store going from strength to strength Kylie decided larger premises were required and on Monday 20th December 2004 ( a week before Christmas – yes we are quite mad to even consider such a large move at this time of year!!) the store was moved to the current location in the Magnolia Mall.

THE STAFF

Kylie - At school I was a “doodler”, I was forever filling little note books with writing, lettering and doodles of all shapes and sizes. The passion that I have for lettering continued and after undertaking an Art Certificate course I went on to complete both the Calligraphy Certificate and Showcard and Ticketwriting Certificate at TAFE. By the time I had finished my courses and filled my head with dreams of lettering in all sorts of circumstances, computers had pretty much taken over most of the work that we had once done by hand. I was happy doing a few Wedding Invitations and Certificates and the like...

But then I discovered Scrapbooking!!

I had discovered a way to use all my creativity using something else I loved – Photos.

I started on my incredible scrapping journey back in the days when there was only one Scrapbooking store in Sydney and I was lucky enough to be offered a teaching position on the staff at that large store located in Sydney’s Hills district. Of course the first class that I started teaching was lettering but it wasn’t long before I started teaching other subjects as well.

As a mad keen scrapbooker, I live and breathe my addiction. I love teaching but after a few years I eventually started to dream of owning my own store where I could not only teach but also share my enthusiasm for this wonderful art / craft / hobby with others.

My dream became real when in March 2004 a friend heard about a little Scrapping Store for sale in Richmond. I raced up to see the owner and before you could say ”It’s Mine” it was mine!

The last year has been a busy one, I have employed two staff members who are an incredible support to me and certainly help in ways that continue to amaze me, the move has been the best thing we have done and keeping up with new products and techniques is certainly lots of fun.

The joy that it gives me to help someone choose coloured cardstock, patterned paper or an embellishment is more than I could’ve imagined. It is absolutely wonderful when a customer comes in and shows me their album. I love what I do with a passion and I hope that I can inspire my customers to create scrapbook pages that they will treasure always.
